From a low born wood elven family on the outskirts of the High Forest, Ailluin's mother and father served in the Moon-Elven military. His mother even rose to an officer's position despite her low birth. After a patrol out of the forest Ailluin overheard his mother telling his father that she had been forced to kill human peasants, lest they give away the position of the patrol. As a child Ailluin gossiped about this with his friends and the information eventually made it back to the Moon Elf noble in charge of the community in which they lived. All the excuse she needed, the Matriarch had Ailluin's mother executed for her crimes, finally able to kill the upstart that had reached beyond her caste.

Ailluin's father threw him out of the community and he was soon forced to make his own way on the roads of the Green Heart. Slowly travelling south he stole what he needed to survive, developing a good eye for what can be traded or sold to the right person. He killed his first man during this time for the price of five silver pieces, and began to realise how easy this act came to him. He learn the many thieves signs of the Black Network and eventually he settled down in Karse. Around ten years after the Cataclysm the city began to come alive again, filled with criminals and mercenaries unable to find honest work anywhere else. Ailluin did well in Karse, eventually moving from thievery to almost exclusively hired killing. Most were low level assassinations but Ailluin's skill and name grew, eventually granting him the monicker "the Shadow".

But the Bladed Guild of Karse didn't fancy outsiders, and their leader was a renowned hater of all non-humans. Ailluin was banished from Karse and travelled south, taking with him the sign of the banished a tiny cage with no door. He made his way around the Far Coast to the Scimitar Coast, eventually settling in Leor. He found less work here, a more civilised place has less need for killing, but still made do. Eventually he picked up a strange contract. The Governor of a town called Greenest was offer 100 gold pieces for the heads of those who lead a group of bandits who attacked his town. Swiftly picking up the bounty Ailluin travelled east towards Greenest, approaching a monk named Leosin for information on the attackers…
